Sustainability

A Commitment to Making the World a Better Place Today and in the Future

Overview
As the nation’s first and oldest independent IT Security consultancy, JANUS is a company founded on the principals of leading the way.

Today JANUS is a leader in Business Sustainability within our industry. We believe that it is critical to reduce waste and protect the environment for this and future generations to come.

What We Are Doing
JANUS has focused on every aspect of our operations in order to make a positive and measurable impact. Some examples of this are listed below:

JANUS corporate headquarters in Stamford, CT is an Energy Star Certified building. To attain the Energy Star rating a program incorporating the following measures has been instituted:

Lighting efficiency enhancement has been achieved by the replacement of incandescent and HID lighting with energy efficient LED and CFl lighting throughout the facility. All lighting equipment that has reached the end of its useful life is recycled. The use of incandescent bulbs has been eliminated.

HVAC systems underwent a major mechanical retrofit in 2010 including new Building Management Systems, Variable Frequency Drives, high efficiency motors anda high efficiency boiler replacement.

Water consumption has been reduced and efficiency has been substantially increased with the installation of dual flush technology sensors, high efficiency urinals, and low flow aerators to improve efficiency greater than LEED standards.

Green Cleaning programs have been mapped to LEED cleaning program standards and incorporate environmentally friendly cleaning products and procedures including vacuum systems that consistently exceed HEPA standards. Microfiber rags and dusters are used exclusively to reduce waste, and when appropriate, chemicals are dispensed from a portion controlled closed dilution system.

Recycling programs for JANUS employees includes a full program for cardboard, paper, and plastic/glass/aluminum.

Consumable printer supplies including all laser and LED toner cartridges and drums are recycled. All spent inkjet cartridges are also recycled. Remanufactured printer supplies are sourced to capitalize on the reuse of recycled metals and plastics.

Technology purchases are required to be Energy Star rated.

Data Center operations are housed in a separate, internal to the building core facility that has its own HVAC system and is double insulated to maintain temperature stability thereby reducing costs and environmental impact.

Server energy consumption has been reduced by 60% through technology upgrades and virtualization. An added benefit of this is lower thermal loading and decreased cooling demands.

LED printing technology that is Energy Star rated and produces no ozone is utilized in the production of all JANUS proposals and collateral materials. Proposals are printed in Black and White and double sided on recycled paper to reduce environmental impact unless otherwise specified in the RFP. Collateral materials are produced on an "as needed" basis thereby reducing excess paper use and document obsolescence waste.

Recycled paper is used whenever possible and internal printing of documents is restricted to a “required only” basis.

Natural lighting is an integral part of every JANUS office and corporate headquarters has floor to ceiling windows throughout. Employees are encouraged to minimize the use of artificial lighting.

Company Vehicle: Company vehicles used by employees to travel to and from locations in the mid-Atlantic region get 31 mpg on the highway. Hybrid vehicles capable of averaging 51mpg are currently under consideration.

Sustainability training has been attended by multiple JANUS employees including a Corporate Director and the CEO. Sessions have focused on best practices, policy development and implementation.
